OBJECTIVES:
At the end of this conference, participant will be able to:
1. Relate common medicines to treat diabetes, their expected effects and side effects.
2. Apply the use of vitamins and herbal supplements in the treatment of diabetes.
3. Examine new treatment management in diabetes (ie. pens, pumps), and recommendations for use.
4. Explain gestational diabetes
5. Determine the risk of diabetes for the mother and infant.
6. Describe management of diabetes during pregnancy goals for blood sugar and medication.
7. Relate the role of nursing and nutrition in the hospital/Skilled Nursing Facility setting.
8. Compare and contrast the change in blood glucose management before and after the advent of Room Service at Regional West Medical Center.
9. Will be able to apply three techniques to encourage behavior change.
10. Differentiate between the types of diabetes including Type 1, Type 2 MODY, LADA.
11. Discuss diagnosis of diabetes.
12. Relate differentiated plan of care and appropriate monitoring of the various types of diabetes.
13. Explain the role and impact of medical nutrition therapy in diabetes.
14. Identify nutrition options for diabetes care
15. Identify techniques for successful self-management training when you don’t have access to an Registered Dietitian/Certified Diabetic Educator.
16. Determine that proper injection technique is critical to optimal control of diabetes.
17. Choose appropriate needle depth for subcutaneous tissue depth.
18. Determine complications of inappropriate techniques and possible solutions.
